While life’s dark maze I tread,
and griefs around me spread,
be Thou my guide;
bid darkness turn to day,

wipe sorrow’s tears away,
nor let me ever stray
from Thee aside.

-Third stanza from today's closing hymn, #517, My Faith Looks up to Thee

WORSHIP NOTE

We thank Matt Heinrich for leading the band and Abigail Wissink for sharing her singing talents. Abi graduated in June and we are very grateful she is still in the valley so we can hear her. A paraphrase of the anthem, sung in German, follows:

If you are with me, I will go gladly, even unto death.

This famous aria, long attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, appeared in both collected editions of Bach’s works. Recently recovered evidence, however, points to Gottried Heinrich Stözel (1690–1749) as the actual composer. In addition to his fine musical education, Stözel studied theology in Leipzig, Germany, the city where Bach would eventually settle in 1723.

The postlude, “O Lamb of God, most stainless!” was a favorite hymn of Johann Sebastian Bach; he set it twice for organ and included it in the opening movement of the St. Matthew Passion. The large setting we hear today replicates the three stanzas of the original hymn.

-Kraig Scott
