MUSIC NOTE

It is always a high Sabbath when we get to hear the orchestra of Walla Walla Valley Academy. Please join me in thanking all of these musicians and their director, Benjamin Gish, for sharing their music with us.

From the orchestra we hear a Prelude and a Sarabande, the two opening movements of the Holberg Suite, Op.40 by Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). We also hear two American Hymn tunes arranged by WWU music alum Terry Blackburn: Holy Manna (Christians, We Have Met to Worship), and Resignation (No. 104 My Shepherd Will Supply My Need). The orchestra also plays Gymnopedie No.1 by Erik Satie, a beautiful meditation arranged for orchestra and harpist Emma Dodds.

Appreciating music requires repeated listening, and I am grateful to Benjamin Gish for giving us this opportunity today. The active listener will note that our service begins and ends with the same music, and the orchestral offerings in between form a chiastic arch.

As you prepare your heart to worship I invite you to silently meditate on the words of the anthem, a paraphrase of Psalm 23 by Isaac Watts.

My Shepherd will supply my need,
Jehovah is His name.
In pastures fresh He makes me feed
Beside the living stream.
He brings my wandering spirit back
When I forsake His ways,
And leads me, for His mercy’s sake,
In paths of truth and grace.

-Kraig Scott
