Search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.

See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

—Psalm 139:23-24

MUSIC NOTE

We thank Matt Heinrich for leading the praise band this week.

For the second Sabbath in a row we sing Hymn No. 542 at the Children’s Story. This tune was composed especially for our Hymnal by a pillar of SDA music making, Wayne Hooper (1920-2007), a graduate of Gem State Academy who, early in his prolific career, taught at Portland Adventist Academy. Mr. Hooper explains that he chose the tune name TENDER SONG to reflect the tenderness in Jesus’ heart as He lovingly received the little ones into His arms and remonstrated with those who would drive the children away. I love both words and tune of this tender hymn and hope this summer to sing it often enough for our congregation to learn it.

Psalm 51 may form the best known prayer of repentance in scripture or anywhere. The prelude draws on this theme and presents one of the most famous works by the great baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). His composition carefully follows the text which is given here. As you prepare your heart to worship I invite you to silently meditate on these words.

O man, lament your great sin,
For the sake of which Christ left His Father’s bosom
And came to earth.
Of a pure, and gentle virgin Jesus was born for us;
He wanted to become the Mediator.
He gave life to the dead and put aside all sickness,
Until the time arrived that He should be sacrifice for us.
He bore the heavy burden of our sins
Stretched out on the cross.

-Kraig Scott

GIVE

Thank you for your generosity to the local ministry of the University Church, as well as to the global mission of the Adventist Church. Today, the loose offering goes toward the University Church budget. Aside from pastors’ salaries, which are funded by donations marked “tithe,” the University Church budget funds all local ministries including Youth and Children, WWVA and Rogers subsidies, broadcast, worship, and the upkeep of our facility.

Summer light service is live–streamed weekly in Heubach Chapel as an option for parents with young children who would find that location helpful. In addition, a toddler room is newly renovated, along with a private room for nursing mothers in the balcony. We offer multiple options for your comfort; all are welcome in the Sanctuary!

All of our services are translated live by native Spanish-speakers and are broadcast to handheld devices available to borrow at the information desk in the lobby. Please see a deacon at the desk on Sabbath to receive a device and instructions on how to use it.

Myron Widmer, our family and youth pastor in the early 1980s, passed away in Angwin after a debilitating struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. He and his wife, Karen, left Walla Walla for his assignment as Associate Editor of the Adventist Review and went from there to Pacific Union College. A memorial service is planned for July 13 at 4pm at the Pacific Union College Church and will be livestreamed. Our condolences go to Karen and their children Joel, Christina, and Brita and their families. Myron is the cousin of Doug Ammon, a member here. Messages can be sent to Karen Widmer at 14 Bishop Place, Angwin, CA 94508.

We are sad to announce that Caryn Pooley passed away on Thursday morning, June 20, with her family around her.
