MUSIC NOTE
We thank Cameron Bierwagen for sharing his music. Cameron, a voice student of Dr. Christine Janis, is a computer science major who comes to us from Redmond, Oregon. We also thank Matt Heinrich, manager of the University bookstore, for leading the praise band.
Our service begins with two settings of the hymn, “Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen.” Johann Heermann wrote the text in 1630 and Johann Crüger composed the famous tune ten years later – this tune has been arranged, quoted, and otherwise used by many composers over the past almost 400 years. The setting by Brahms is justifiably well known but I chose this hymn for today’s service because of Helmut Walcha’s setting. In all of scripture Psalm 136 forms the most famous litany – a repetitive series of statements such as petitions, devotions, supplications or prayers. Helmut Walcha sets the unadorned melody of “Herzliebster Jesu” against an ostinato – a continuously repeated musical phrase. The result, simultaneously simple and complex, produces a profound effect. As you prepare your heart to worship God I invite you to meditate on the beautiful words of Heermann’s hymn, as translated by Robert Bridges.

Thank you for your generosity to the local ministry of the University Church, as well as to the global mission of the Adventist Church. Today, the loose offering goes toward the University Church budget. Aside from pastors’ salaries, which are funded by donations marked “tithe,” the University Church budget funds all local ministries including Youth and Children, WWVA and Rogers subsidies, broadcast, worship, and the upkeep of our facility.

Mentorship is a valued tradition at Walla Walla University, providing supportive relationships and education to all first-time freshman students as they make the sometimes-difficult transition to University life.
