The University Church pastors wish a very warm welcome to the many athletes, coaches, parents, and sponsors visiting campus this week for the WWU Friendship Tournament. It is our prayer that as we enjoy the fun and camaraderie of healthy sportsmanship, we continue to put our hope in the One who is over and through and in all things.

The prophet Jeremiah writes, “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight.”

On this beautiful Sabbath day, we are pleased to host you in this Sanctuary where we in unity humbly bow our heads before our Creator God.

—The University Church Pastoral Staff

The University Church’s annual Black History celebration takes place next Sabbath, February 2. Pastor Michael Kelly from the Mt. Rubidoux Church in Riverside, California will preach two different sermons that day; one for First Serve at 9:30am and the other at Second Service at 11:45am. University Church members can expect the wonderful music leadership of Drs. Wayne Bucknor and Andrew Young visiting once again from Oakwood University. “Total Praise: A Festival of Choirs” concert is planned for Sabbath afternoon at 4pm in the Sanctuary. All are encouraged to attend as we reflect on black history in America, challenge ourselves to be about the cause of justice, and worship our great God together in the African American style.

MUSIC NOTE

We thank the many student of University Singers and the students and community members of Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Brandon Beck. Please join me in thanking all of these musicians.

The anthem presents Michael Barrett’s arrangement of a song sung in isiXhosa – one of the official languages of South Africa and Zimbabwe. The translation follows:

Thixo onothando God of love
Ndimi phambi kwakho I stand before thee
Thixo onothando, God of love,
Ndiph’ uthando Give me love so I
ndifakaze ngawe. may testify about you.
Hosanna phezulu, Hosanna above,
Hosann’ enyangweni Hosanna in the highest
Thixo ndila namhla, God I am here today,
Hosanna. Hosanna.

Our closing hymn includes many of the keywords in today’s scripture. As you prepare your heart to worship I invite you to silently meditate on this wonderful text, some of which is given here.

Lord, whose love in humble service
Bore the weight of human need,
Who upon the cross, forsaken,
Worked Your mercy’s perfect deed:
We, Your servants, bring the worship
Not of voice alone, but heart;
Consecrating to Your purpose
Every gift which You impart.
Still Your children wander homeless;
Still the hungry cry for bread;
Still the captives long for freedom;
Still in grief we mourn our dead.
