Walla Walla University Church
May 21, 2016
Coming to the University Church in August, this two–day leadership training event is telecast live from Chicago to 600+ sites across the country. Join over 150,000 people who are committed to growing as leaders in their spheres of influence. Presenters in 2016 include Melinda Gates,Alan Mulally, T.D. Jakes and many more. University Church members receive 50 percent off the standard rate.
In many ways it’s a hidden ministry. You wouldn’t know it’s happening unless you benefit from it or have been told. Sandra Graham, a teacher at Walla Walla Community College and a member of our congregation, is one of three volunteers who carry the unique and important ministry of making our worship services more accessible to Spanish speaking participants.
Each Sabbath, in a small studio in the Canaday Technology Center building, Sandra or one of her partners in ministry watch the service over video and offer a live English-to-Spanish interpretation of the proceedings. The resulting audio track is sent out instantly over radio in the sanctuary. Just as any worshiper can pick up a personal audio device at the information desk for amplifying service sound, Spanish speaking participants can use the same devices to receive the live translation.
“I am happy to do it,” says Sandra, who has been volunteering as an interpreter for 9 years. She reports that although there are local church communities whose services are entirely in Spanish, some people prefer the University Church for its proximity to home, their children’s request, and style. “Even if there are only one or two who need it, we who have been given the gift of language love to exercise it,” Sandra said.
As is the case with many of our ministries at the University Church, the interpretation team is always welcoming of new faces. Students and church members alike who are bilingual in Spanish and English are invited to help out. If you would like to try your hand in this important work, get in contact with Sandra by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We thank the students of I Cantori and the students and community members who comprise University Singers for sharing their music with us. Today marks the end of the academic year for University Singers. Please join me in thanking them for their gracious musical service all year long. You can hear more from these two choirs at their Spring Choral Concert, 5pm this afternoon here in the University Church sanctuary.
University Singers perform selections from Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre. An English paraphrase of the Hebrew text follows.
Temuná; Kalá kallá
A picture of you is engraved in my heart, moving between light and darkness. Light bride, she is all mine,
and lightly she will kiss me!
Lárov; Éyze shéleg!
“Mostly,” said the roof to the sky,
“the distance between you and I is endlessness; But a while ago two came up here,
and only one centimeter was left between us.” What snow! Like little dreams falling from the sky.
AT THE UNIVERSITY CHURCH
The University Church budget funds many important aspects of our local ministry. Although pastors' salaries are funded by donations marked "tithe", the University Church budget is what subsidizes our amazing K-12 school programs at Walla Walla Valley Academy and Rogers Adventist School. It also makes our worship services and broadcast ministry possible. Thank you for your generous and systematic support!
As always - we welcome your gifts made right here on our website. Click Here to Give!
