THIS SABBATH
AT THE UNIVERSITY CHURCH
WORSHIP NOTE
Today we welcome current and past students of the Walla Walla University music department. Nicholas Ault, a current sophomore psychology major and member of I Cantori, will sing for us. We again welcome Bethany Foster, another WWU alumnus, to the organ bench. Additionally, we welcome 2017 alumnus Noel Jabagat, who is now studying at Eastern Washington University to attain a Master of Music degree in performance. Walla Walla locals Margo Cox and Ken Vyhmeister will accompany our soloists on the piano. Thank you, musicians, for making time to serve in our community!
The first of Noel’s pieces is the prelude: a luxurious piece that was likely composed at the turn of the 19th century, approximately when Beethoven began to lose his hearing. The adagio movement from Brahms’s Op. 108 stays true to his compositional style, with a lyrical and flowing melody that intertwines with rich, unexpected harmonies from the piano. Though it is possible you’ve never heard of Kreisler, you will likely not forget his name after hearing the postlude today. It is an absolutely stunning and difficult work.
I’d like to leave you with the words of part of the pre- sermon anthem today. May they remind you to have faith in Christ, who knows His plans for you, even amidst the worst of circumstances:
Let the little birds of faith come and nest therein.
God, who made the sun to shine on both you and me, God, who took away my eyes that my soul might see!
-Lindsay Armstrong
